چکیده

Abstract. Data on irrigation patterns and trends at field-level detail across broad extents are vital for assessing managing limited water resources. Until recently, there has been a scarcity of comprehensive, consistent, frequent maps the US. Here we present new Landsat-based Irrigation Dataset (LANID), which is comprised 30 m resolution annual covering conterminous US (CONUS) period 1997–2017. The main dataset identifies extent irrigated croplands, pastureland, hay each year in study period. Derivative include layers maximum extent, frequency trends, identification formerly areas intermittently lands. Temporal analysis reveals that 38.5×106 ha croplands pasture–hay irrigated, among yearly active area ranged from ∼22.6 to 24.7×106 ha. LANID products provide several improvements over other data including details change frequency, an time step, collection ∼10 000 visually interpreted ground reference locations eastern where such have lacking. Our demonstrated overall accuracy above 90 % all years regions, more humid challenging-to-map US, marking significant advancement products, whose accuracies 50 80 %. In terms detection, our yield per-pixel transition 81 show good agreement with Department Agriculture reports both county state levels. described maps, derivative layers, users unique opportunities local nationwide driving forces, consequences encourage further development assessment approaches improved mapping irrigation, especially challenging like available through https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.5548555 (Xie Lark, 2021a).

Application of Landsat to Evaluate Effects of Irrigation Forbearance

Thirty-meter resolution Landsat data were used to evaluate the effects of irrigation management in the Wood River Valley, Upper Klamath Basin, Oregon. In an effort to reduce water use and leave more of the water resource in-stream, 4,674 ha of previously flood irrigated pasture was managed as dryland pasture. Ground-based measurements over one irrigated and one unirrigated pasture site were use...

Mediterranean irrigation under climate change: more efficient irrigation needed to compensate for increases in irrigation water requirements

Irrigation in the Mediterranean is of vital importance for food security, employment and economic development. This study systematically assesses how climate change and increases in atmospheric CO2 concentrations may affect irrigation requirements in the Mediterranean region by 2080–2090. Future demographic change and technological improvements in irrigation systems are taken into account, as i...
